Te Huranga The revealing.

It appears that he had heard me because my search took off again. and I personally couldn't think of a fate worse than to be forgotten by your own family as with nanny Matana.

This is a section of the Maori Land Minute book 1897.

Because the books were hand written back then you have be able to read the handwriting style.

My interpretation of the writing is

Onewhero Lot 18
Pahiwi Te Aho to - Maunganui Te Aho
Te Keha /Te Aho & Te kapu
Maunganui, Wetere, Pare, Pahiwi
from Wetere
Ngarongo Wetere
Ngaparaihe Wetere
Rangiwawae Wetere
Pepe Rangiwawae.

Te Aho & Ramarihi

Takerei Te Aho
Peti Te Aho
Kono Te Aho (Te Kono is the mother of the Astle family.)

You may noticed that Te Aho had two wives, Well back then that wasn't uncommon,  A rangatira would usually have a few wives.. In this case Te Kapu and  Ramarihi, further throughout the minutes it states that Ramarihi died first and Te Kapu dies in 1904.

When I found Wētere and his parents  and then once I saw the name of his mother  Te Kapu, I knew almost immediately that I was on the right track. Because Te Kapu was my nana's name."I thought to myself, this is where I am meant to be.  In my mind I imagined that Ngāparaihe named her mokopuna after her own  Grandmother.as Nana Molly would be 10 years old when Ngāparāihe dies in Ngāruawāhia in 1937 of Heart failure and Tuberculosis.

I sat there thinking to myself, "Thanks for the help in trying to find our Whakapapa Nana Molly".

I read further through the minutes and found that Te Ahomoana was his dad's full name Te kapu's husband.   I was so proud of my find that I didn't notice Te Keha written on the side of Te Aho's name. if I had of noticed that at the time, I would have immediately found my way to where I am today.

Gee's rushing things never works out, I don't know why I don't take my time with things.

This is another portion of the same minute book with a date in the top corner which reads 12th of June 1897

In this version you see the name Te Ahomoana and Te Kapu and the correct names of their sons and daughter
Wētere Te Aho, Māunganui Te Aho, Parerawera Te Aho & Ngārongo Te Aho.

 Te Ahomoana & Ramarihi

Takerei Te Aho, Peti Te Aho, Te Kono Te Aho.

I can't really make out properly what the rest says but with my best attempts I think it says

Pareraware is now in joint, Orders have been previously made in several interest of Takerei Te aho in favor of Wētere, Maunganui & Parerāware only Ngārongo and Te kono were left out. I found that this int/"interests"  has not been dealt with & I ask that it be awarded to Te Kono as being nearest of kin to the deceased. Pēti Te Aho is dead and Takarei Te Aho is the "Brown peanut" lol

I don't think it says brown peanut but I haven't a clue what the hell those word are.

    2. Yes Crown grantee. If you do more research on Takarei you will find he has a lot more mana than a brown peanut. Te Keha is the brother of my great x6 Haripata Te Pou on my mothers side. Takarei is my great x3 grandfather on my fathers side.

    2. Kia Ora,

Arohamai I am not too sure who I am composing this to, it seems very weird being my first time on this Site. My sister came across your blog and we were very interested and overwhelmed by your research regarding your whakapapa.
My sisters name is Natalie and mine is Olga we are the descendants of (Te Aho o te Rangi Wharepu) and his daughter ( Te Kono) the wife of Thomas Astle. We are the daughters of ( Ira Norman nee Campbell) and she was born in Te Kono's homestead which is situated in a beautiful place in Matakana north of Auckland, not far from where the prisoners were kept.
Yes our mum certainly has her story to tell, and we are blessed to have her here still with us. My mum was 3yrs old when Te Kono passed away, so you could image the whaikorero that was bestowed upon her by our grandparents whom raised her, (sadly it was not in te reo) and sadly we were not all blessed with the gift. However there is a good explanation to why she was not taught it.
And like you, we've had to do our research, a search that will hopefully one day give peace for my mum and all of our whanau and before her.
This has been a journey to unmask what has been hidden for many many years. As you can see the heading we have chosen tells the overwelming cry of Te Kono, she is wailing ma te wa soon they will know who we are. It is recited in te reo, we have not revealed the rest of it. We do have a whakapapa, however we chose not to display it on the internet. If it is the right time and if you do decide to contact us we would be willing to meet with you and your whanau to further clarify anything else you would like to know.
Please do not hesitate to contact us; my mob; 0221342572 to txt me. Or my email address is holibran@email.com. I do have a landline but it would be much easier to catch me on my mobile, Alternately to contact me via this site would be a very slim chance of me not been able to hook into this site again! Just letting you know in case you do decide to contact me through this way.

      ngamihi,
      Olga and Whanau.

  4. I've noted another narrative about who Te Aho o te Rangi Wharepu (per Goldie) was.
Back in May 2014, wakahuia made a doco about the Battle of Rangiriri. In that doco Rahui Papa and Tame Rora refer to Te Wharepu in reference to Te Aho o te Rangi Wharepu, and that it was he who was essentially the architect of Rangiriri Pa - go to point 21m:11 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB4xkYJ1kKQ
This narrative is confirmed by Brad Totorewa of Ngati Naho Rangiriri who states that they believe that Pene Wharepu is Te Aho o te Rangi Wharepu (who sat for Goldie) and that this is the same Te Wharepu who signed Te Whakaputanga, and that Te Wharepu had a number of wives.
This narrative is different from that believed by others like Dr Vincent O'Malley, who in a report commissioned by the Waitangi Tribunal dated Dec 2010 (Wai 898, #A22) pg 78 "Pene Pukewhau ... was also known as Pene Te Wharepu" ... and that "Pene Te Wharepu ... had been mortally wounded at Rangiriri and spent his remaining weeks alive in a desperate but ultimately fruitless effort to broker peace with the Crown". And likewise according to Fenton "...the Rev Heta Tarawhiti was quite right in visiting Te Wharepu when he was dying" (pg 542).
